Kees Van Dongen, de son vrai nom Cornelis Théodorus Marie van Dongen, est un peintre français d'origine néerlandaise (1877-1968)... Rebelle, proche des milieux anarchistes autour de 1895,
prompt à la caricature et la dénonciation sociale qui
trouva à Paris la reconnaissance artistique dans les années 20.

féminin, en particulier le visage fardé jusqu’à la déformation par la
lumière électrique empruntée à Degas et Toulouse-Lautrec, devenant en
quelque sorte sa griffe et mettra en scène une nouvelle femme à
connotation plus érotique.

Il fait alors des compositions décoratives de nus très stylisées, et s'intéresse de plus en plus au portrait féminin, par lesquels il exprime par sa composition non seulement la force instinctive du désir, mais également le charme, la séduction, l'esthétisme. Kees Van Dongen prend goût à la vie mondaine, et aux plaisirs de la vie. Il est un peintre à la mode et produit des toiles où la pose du modèle est outrée, le costume et l’accessoire théâtralisés révélant le factice de ses personnalités qui n’existent qu’à travers leur rôle. C'est la période " cocktail" du peintre, au cours de laquelle les scandales se succéderont, tant pour les soirées privées dans lesquelles il se distinguera par ses excentricités qui lui attireront la sympathie du public.
